The Liget Budapest project replaced surface parking in the historic Városliget park with an art-filled underground garage, guided by camera-based sensors that blend into the design.
Liget Budapest is one of Europe’s most ambitious urban development projects: the complete renovation of the Városliget, one of the city’s most iconic public parks, to 21st-century standards while respecting more than 200 years of tradition. A main goal was to reduce traffic in the park and eliminate surface parking by building an 800-space underground facility across three floors — decorated with contemporary paintings by Hungarian artists that both beautify the garage and help visitors remember where they parked. The project was made possible by CREATIV Bartex.
This reinvention of the parking experience — an “underground museum” — called for guidance technology that complements the aesthetics. Quercus SC Indoor camera-based parking sensors, installed in the ceiling, integrate perfectly with the artwork on display. Sensor colors guide drivers to available spaces and identify spaces for reduced-mobility users, families and electric vehicles, while digital parking signs display real-time availability on each aisle at corners, level changes and other decision points.
All data is collected and organized by the BirdWatch parking platform, which provides reports, real-time decision making and a high level of security and control. In a city-centre car park where users may arrive anxious or stressed, the system helps parkers quickly find a place — including spaces close to doors and elevators — with every functionality delivered at an extremely high detection rate and accuracy.
