Gran Via 2 embraces smart parking with SmartLPR cameras from Quercus Technologies
A smoother, more convenient and efficient parking experience at one of Barcelona’s leading shopping centres
Gran Via 2, one of the benchmark shopping centres in the Barcelona metropolitan area, has taken a major step forward by implementing an advanced Artificial Intelligence-based license plate recognition solution.
The objective of the project was clear: to provide a completely seamless entry and exit experience by eliminating tickets and barriers, improving vehicle flow and mobility, and giving the operator accurate and reliable control over all vehicle movements.

A system designed for maximum reliability
To ensure the highest level of accuracy in vehicle identification, a total of 44 SmartLPR cameras were strategically installed across all access points of the parking facility:
- 20 cameras at the entrances, covering 10 entry lanes.
- 24 cameras at the exits, covering 12 exit lanes.
The Gran Via 2 installation is based on the latest generation of SmartLPR cameras from Quercus Technologies, featuring QAI Inside, the company’s proprietary Artificial Intelligence technology. AI is embedded directly within the device, enabling vehicle recognition and analysis to be performed inside the camera itself, without the need for additional external systems.
The installation was configured using Quercus Technologies’ HRR (High Reliability Recognition) system, a solution specifically designed to maximize license plate recognition reliability. The key to the system lies in the installation of two SmartLPR cameras per lane, capable of performing a double reading of the license plate from both the front and rear of the vehicle.
The Artificial Intelligence algorithms embedded in SmartLPR automatically select the most reliable license plate reading, significantly increasing recognition rates while minimizing incidents caused by reflections, dirt, difficult angles, or partially obscured license plates.
In addition, this configuration provides a particularly important advantage for motorcycle management. By incorporating rear plate recognition, the system ensures reliable identification of two-wheeled vehicles, which only display a license plate at the rear.
Thanks to the combination of SmartLPR cameras and the HRR system, Gran Via 2 now benefits from an infrastructure capable of delivering the highest levels of accuracy and reliability, both of which are essential for fully automated access control systems.

Barrierless and ticketless parking: a fully automated experience
The installation operates under a barrierless and ticketless model, eliminating both physical barriers and paper tickets at the entrances.
The system operates in Automatic Virtual (Free Flow) mode, where every vehicle entry is automatically registered through license plate recognition without requiring drivers to stop or interact with any device.
This operating model offers significant advantages for both users and operators:
- Elimination of queues at entry and exit points.
- Improved traffic flow throughout the parking facility.
- Reduced maintenance costs associated with barriers and ticket dispensers.
- Lower paper consumption and a more sustainable operation.
- A faster, more convenient and modern user experience.
The high recognition reliability provided by SmartLPR technology and the HRR system makes this solution ideal for facilities with high vehicle turnover and large numbers of visitors.

Integration with user information systems
Another key aspect of the project was the integration of SmartLPR cameras with the payment machines and entrance information displays through the Quercus API.
Each time a vehicle enters the facility and its license plate is read, the registration number is automatically displayed on the shopping centre’s welcome screen, enhancing user convenience and streamlining the parking experience.
The deployment at Gran Via 2 demonstrates how next-generation license plate recognition technologies enable the transition toward fully intelligent parking models, without barriers or tickets, while maintaining the highest levels of control, automation and reliability.
With this installation, Gran Via 2 reinforces its commitment to innovation and the continuous improvement of the visitor experience by implementing a solution designed to meet both current and future urban mobility needs.
